Since September 30, the closest full-service supermarket to the I-75 end of Corunna Road has been about a mile west of where it used to be. Kroger's store at G3288 Corunna Road in Carman Plaza is closed. Every grocery option left on Corunna Road is farther west. Kamil's Mid-Eastern Foods, a small specialty market, comes first by address. The big-box stores sit together about a mile from the old store. The remaining Kroger shares the Dye Road end with an import market. For anyone who shopped at Carman Plaza out of habit, the new weekly trip is still on Corunna Road. It just starts farther west.
What Closed, and When
Kroger confirmed the closing in a statement to Flint Beat in September. A spokesperson said the company had "made the difficult decision to close our Kroger store located at G3288 Corunna Road in Flint Township, effective September 30, 2026," and that each affected employee would be offered a transfer to another location. NBC25 reported the plan in late July. Banana 101.5 marked September 30 as the store's final day.
ABC12 placed the closing inside a larger plan. Kroger announced it would close about 60 stores across 2025 and 2026 after its proposed merger with Albertsons fell through. The same report said the Kroger at Corunna and Dye roads would stay open. Flint Beat noted that the closing cuts Kroger's Flint-area count from three stores to two.
That second Kroger matters for the map. Kroger's remaining Corunna Road store is at the western end, so the grocery stops along the corridor now all lie in one direction from Carman Plaza.
Every Stop Is Now West of the Old Store
Flint Beat listed the nearby options along Corunna Road with their approximate distances from Carman Plaza. In address order, they run like this:
| Stop | Address | Distance from Carman Plaza |
|---|---|---|
| ALDI | 4270 Corunna Road | About 1 mile |
| Walmart Supercenter | 4313 Corunna Road | About 1.2 miles |
| Sam's Club | 4373 Corunna Road | About 1.3 miles |
| Kroger | 5249 Corunna Road | About 2 miles |
| Sindbad Foods Market | 5342 Corunna Road | About 2.2 miles |
ALDI, Walmart and Sam's Club sit within about a hundred address numbers of each other, so a single stop around the 4300 block covers a discount grocer, a supercenter and a warehouse club. Another mile west, the Kroger at Dye Road and Sindbad Foods Market are only a few tenths of a mile apart by Flint Beat's distances.
So the old weekly trip now has two possible endpoints instead of one. A shopper who wants three stores in one stop has the 4300 block. A shopper who wants to stay with Kroger drives to Dye Road.
The Dye Road End Has a Kroger and an Import Market
At the western end, the remaining Kroger has a neighbor with a much more specific inventory. Sindbad Foods Market, at 5342 W. Corunna Road in Flint Township, was profiled by MLive in December 2025, which described it as a regional hub for imported Middle Eastern foods.
Owner Magdy Yasseen imports products directly through his company, Yasseen Imports, and distributes them across Michigan and nearby states. MLive reported that the store's centerpiece is short-grain Egyptian rice imported under the Rehana brand. Yasseen told the outlet, "This one is actually from Egypt." The shelves also carry Paradise juices from Egypt, Egyptian Schweppes fruit drinks, clear frying oil, tea biscuits and pantry staples that big chains usually don't stock.
The dairy case comes from Yasseen's own brand, B. Haleeb, which he launched in January 2023. According to MLive, it includes two-pound tubs of yogurt, 500-gram containers of labaneh, a sour labaneh called Leban Shami, and cheeses such as halloumi, akkawi and nabulsi. On meat, he was direct with the outlet: "My meat here is only premium."
Sindbad keeps short Sunday hours. MLive listed its hours as 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. If you're pairing the two stores, go to Sindbad first on a Sunday, because its window closes early in the afternoon.
Before the Chains, a 2,000-Square-Foot Specialty Shop
By address, one store sits between Carman Plaza and ALDI. Kamil's Mid-Eastern Foods, at 3701 Corunna Road, has been there since 1993. MLive profiled it in July 2025 and described a 2,000-square-foot storefront owned by Kamil Ghoseyni, who came to Flint from Lebanon in 1979.
Kamil's isn't a supermarket replacement, and it doesn't try to be. Its strengths are specific. MLive reported more than 80 varieties of spices, about 400 fresh pitas sold each week, cusa squash, stuffed grape leaves, and Turkish olive oil, which Ghoseyni calls one of his specialties. The takeout counter covers a quick dinner, with falafel sandwiches, hummus, baba ghannouj, lentil soup, spinach pies, za'atar pies and kibbeh. Baklava trays come from Shatila Bakery in Dearborn.
As of MLive's 2025 profile, the store was open seven days a week. Call ahead for current hours before making it part of a regular trip.
The order of stores on the road suggests a practical routine for households east of the old plaza. Pita, produce and prepared food come from Kamil's, with pantry basics from the 4300-block cluster farther west. Both are on the same road and on the same side of the old store.
What Happens to Carman Plaza Itself
The plaza is for sale. A property page on the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance's Genesee County site-selection database lists 3288 Corunna Road at $3,100,000 for a 68,705-square-foot building. The page was last updated October 20, 2026, and still describes the center as "Kroger anchored." It names Family Dollar and Best Beauty Supply as tenants and says about 20,000 square feet is vacant.
No new grocer or anchor tenant has been announced for the former Kroger space. Until one is, the grocery trip heads west.
Two Options Off Corunna Road
Some shoppers would rather not drive the corridor at all, and two other options fill different needs:
- Flint Farmers' Market, 300 East First Street in downtown Flint, says on its website that it's open year-round on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. That makes it a cold-weather option for produce and artisanal goods.
- Meijer has a Flint store at 2474 W. Hill Road, according to Meijer's store locator. Meijer also lists a Swartz Creek store among its nearby locations.
Neither one changes the basic shape of the Corunna Road trip. They're useful for errands that start somewhere other than home.
Corridor changes like this one shape how a neighborhood works day to day, and they're part of what the Shane Adams Group watches across Genesee County. If you live in Flint Township and want to talk about how the Corunna Road corridor is changing around your home, contact us.
